2. Bricks per day: what the data actually supports
Every mason gets asked this and every source answers differently. Published estimates run from about 300 bricks a day for a solo mason with no labourer feeding him, to 500–800 for an experienced bricklayer on repetitive work, up to 1,600 modular brick per person per day quoted in a trade magazine as an example of a high-production crew — not a typical day.
There is no authoritative national average. The field rule of thumb most commonly used for residential work is roughly 300–600 bricks per mason per day, and that is a synthesis of anecdotal ranges, not an industry benchmark. Treat it as a sanity check on your own timesheet, never as the basis of a quote.
Price from your own last three jobs instead. Your own hours on your own kind of wall is the only production rate that will hold up, and it is the number that makes your quote defensible when a customer pushes back.
3. Materials: what the brick price leaves out
Brick at $3–$8 per square foot is the headline material cost, but a wall is not only brick. The lines that get missed are the ones that cost you margin.
- Mortar, sand and cement — priced by bag and mixed on site, easy to under-order.
- Concrete block backing and the footing, on any structural wall.
- Rebar, wall ties and damp-proof course.
- Excavation and spoil removal for the footing.
- Scaffolding or a tower on anything above chest height.
- Reclaimed or specialty brick, which can multiply the material line on its own.
4. What moves the number up
Two walls of the same area can be double each other in price. Name these before you commit to a rate.
- Structural versus veneer — a footing and reinforcement change the job entirely.
- Brick type and grade — reclaimed and specialty stock raise material cost sharply.
- Wall height — scaffolding, lifting and slower laying above about 4 ft.
- Site access — no truck access means every pallet is moved by hand.
- Local labour market — the $70–$110 hourly spread is mostly geography.
5. Sales tax and margin on a masonry quote
The average combined state and local sales tax rate in the US is 7.53%, and the top states run above 10%. On a $12,000 wall that is a four-figure line — getting it wrong once wipes out the margin on the job.
Most states tax the materials a contractor consumes and exempt labour on new construction or capital improvement work. Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota and West Virginia tax services broadly, and several states tax repair and installation labour even when new-construction labour is exempt. Check your own state before you send a quote.
Then put margin on top of everything, not just labour. If labour is 45% of the job, a margin applied only to your hours is a margin on less than half the work you carry.
